“Cycling for change”

Pop quiz: What is featured in the Bend Bulletin’s Monday cycling section?

Answer: The Tour!

Thanks to Heather Clark for her great coverage!

Food Justice

What a great sticker! I picked it up at the Food Justice Conference in Eugene, Oregon over President’s Day weekend. The meetings explored “the history and future of our food system with a focus on sustainability, equity and community”. It was an inspirational three days of conversations with a huge variety of professionals – from farmers to academicians, everyone had a place at the table.

My favorite session was a talk entitled “New Media and Food Activism” with Naomi Starkman from Civil Eats. The discussion ranged from Twitter to 50 Cent (a mainstream Rap artist for you non-pop culture folks… don’t worry, I didn’t know who he was either!) to farmer internet access. It also turned me onto this little gem:

The main message of the conference: define food justice for you and then create a strategy towards achieving this aim. I have an ongoing definition of food justice in my notebook… The current draft states:

“Food justice is open knowledge of where food comes from and available resources to grow one’s own, along with equitable access to healthy food that is procured from a system that follows responsible cultivation and fair compensation for its workers.”

What’s your definition of Food Justice?

Cycle and Style – “Pedaling for healthier school meals”

The fabulous online ladies bike mag Cycle & Style just published a write-up of the Tour. This website is a great resource for women looking for some cycling (and style…) inspiration!

Media frenzy!

Ok, not really… But I did appear on Keen’s Hybridlife Radio yesterday. You can find the recording here. And today the Tour is featured on the awesome blog The Lunch Tray. I have really been enjoying spreading the word about the Tour and talking to individuals eager to get involved in healthy kids initiatives.

I had a great time in the studio yesterday with Hybridlife’s hosts Adam and Heather. Todd was in the corner operating all sorts of equipment while the rest of us chatted around a table cluttered with mikes, notes and computers. The show went really smoothly and conversation flowed easily during the 30 minute live broadcast. The only hiccup arrived in the form of a rouge golden retriever who attempted to nose his way into the recording studio during the middle of our piece. Luckily, we managed to suppress our giggles  and shoo him away without any major interruptions. I really enjoyed the experience and am hopeful that I will be able to update Hybridlife on the Tour’s progress throughout my ride.

Don’t forget – You can tune in to their great show every Wednesday at 1p.m. PST.

On a side note, I felt very fortunate to witness one of the more spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen over Mt. Hood the the Central Oregon Cascades on my drive back to Bend from Portland. Additionally, I took Mr. Grizwald the Siberian Husky, for a jog along the waterfront downtown before our departure  and had a splendid urban run in the sunshine. I am feeling very thankful for life these days!

The Tour is on the airwaves!

I will be appearing on Keen’s Hybridlife Radio show this week to chat with hosts Heather & Adam about the Tour and its interdisciplinary approach to healthy kids. Tune in Wednesday, Feb 9 at 1 p.m. PST to listen to my radio debut!

Tour Milestones

Lots of exciting happenings in the world of the School Food Tour!

Most importantly, I’m headed  into a local school today to meet with teachers and students. They’re really enthusiastic to assist with the development of the Tour curriculum and I can’t wait to start interacting with the kids. I’ll update ya’ll later on about my day.

Additionally, I’ll be appearing on Keen’s Hybridlife Radio Show on February 9. This is going to be a fantastic opportunity to reach out to a wide audience through this popular internet radio network. Check them out here:
