Pacific Star Gardens

Pacific Star Gardens. Though small in name, this fairly large farming operation is big on ideas. Robert and his wife Debbie were kind enough to host me on their lovely piece of property north of Davis, California this week for a tour and conversation about local food.

Pacific Star hosts groups of 2nd graders each fall in an effort to connect students with local farming operations. They sell at the local farmers markets and are actively involved in various advisory councils. Robert’s vision for future farm developments includes more animals, diversifying their crops, more fruit and nut trees and an industrial kitchen where they can prepare and package food. Thanks guys, for a great visit!

Great ideas for school garden fundraising:

  • Plant rosemary bushes and create beautiful wreaths to sell during Christmas
  • Have a Tour de’ Scarecrows – students create fun scarecrows, sell at farmers market around Halloween
  • ‘Rent’ out unused garden space to local families
