Efforts to improve school food received a boost on Monday as President Obama signed The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 into law. See HERE for a concise summary of this encouraging legislation. Highlights of the bill for me include improved ease of enrollment into the National School Lunch Program for low-income students, implementation of more health-conscious nutritional standards, an increase in the operation of summer food programs and an emphasis on food insecurity research. For a more detailed description of the new regulations I recommend GovTrack.
I’m so pleased that the President and First Lady have placed a priority on providing wholesome food to our nation’s students. Yay!
